Buabefasnacht (Boys’ Carnival)

Has a male citizen of Imst reached the age of 16, he is eligible to take part in the Fasnacht – that is tradition. (there is no “oldest” – unless you want to make place for the younger generation, or you no longer have the strength to take part). Imagine the impatience of a young boy from Imst, who possibly needs to wait years until he’s old enough to actively take part but already feels fully ready for the Fasnacht, though! Therefore, groups of boys started to form their own “wild” Fasnacht again and again: a mask taken from here, a costume taken from there or cowbells from the attic and the adults were already imitated – in all their acts, including their commitment to the bit.

One and the same

Near the end of the 1930’s and especially after WWII, Imst made it a priority to hold organized carnivals reserved only for the boys of Imst. As of now, the “Buabefasnacht” and the carnival of the adults are one and the same: Every figure takes part in the exact same rhythm, with exception of the Monday after, of course, to not overwhelm the young men. The number of floats is limited to the traditional as well – the witches’ and the bears’.
